New Harmony Firefly Festival
Celebrate the magic of summer at the New Harmony Firefly Festival — a beloved outdoor tradition in historic New Harmony, Indiana! As dusk falls and the sun sets, thousands of twinkling fireflies light up warm summer evenings along the wooded trails and riverfront, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle for all ages.
This year’s festival honors Indiana’s state insect, Say’s Firefly, first described right here in New Harmony by naturalist Thomas Say in 1826 — a whimsical blend of nature, history, and community spirit.
Enjoy two nights of fun and wonder that include:
✨ Evening firefly viewing tours — stroll the trails or take a tram/golf cart ride to iconic viewing spots near the Wabash River.
🎶 Live music & glow dance parties — family-friendly entertainment under the stars.
🍔 Food & local vendors — grab snacks and drinks perfect for picnics.
👨🔬 Historic presentations — see Thomas Say: Frontier Scientist performances that share the story of the firefly’s place in Hoosier history.
🏃♂️ Firefly Festival 5K Run/Walk (Saturday morning) — optional 2- and 4-mile courses along scenic historic paths and river views.
🎨 Kids activities & crafts, nature walks, period theater, and more — fun for the whole family.
Whether you’re here to marvel at nature’s own light show or take part in community festivities, the Firefly Festival invites visitors of all ages to make magical memories in one of Indiana’s most historic towns.
📍 Centered around the Atheneum and throughout New Harmony’s historic district, this two-day event blends learning, outdoors, and celebration into one luminous summer weekend
