A Veil Across the Stars
Music to Celebrate the American Semiquincentennial
A Veil Across the Stars: Music to Celebrate the American Semiquincentennial is a solo piano concert that explores the many musical and cultural influences that shape American identity. Performed by pianist Clare Longendyke at Thrall’s Opera House on September 19, 2026 at 4:30 p.m., the program features music by living American composers alongside twentieth-century classics, highlighting perspectives and traditions that are often underrepresented on the classical concert stage.
The program presents musical works that draw from a wide range of influences, including South Asian musical traditions, Diné landscapes and culture, Black literature, Broadway song, jazz, folk music, and reflections on American history and identity.
Known for performances marked by “artistic ferocity” and imaginative programming, Clare Longendyke is a nationally recognized classical concert artist. Her performances connect new works with standard repertoire in ways that make classical music feel accessible, relevant, and engaging for modern audiences. Her debut album, …of dreams unveiled, reached #2 on the Billboard Traditional Classical chart and has been praised for its creativity and adventurous spirit.
Longendyke’s artistic mission centers on expanding representation in classical music and creating programs that welcome both longtime concertgoers and audiences new to the art form. Influenced by everything from Chopin and Debussy to American folk music, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles, she believes classical music should reflect the diversity of the people and cultures that shape it today.
Activities are made possible in part by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana.
