NEW HARMONY IS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
The picturesque historic town of New Harmony is always ready for its close-up. Locals and visitors alike find plenty of reasons to whip out cameras or smart phones to capture the magic that abounds in this extraordinary little town.
We start nearly every morning by peeking outside to see the conditions that await us. Blue skies with interesting clouds? Fabulous! Fog? We run out the door to snap away at the misty beauty. Snow? Grab the coat and head out to see where nature’s white winter blanket has transformed the landscape. Clear skies? That’s bound to mean we’ll find people biking, picnicking, children playing
And then there are the sunsets. We seem to get more than our share of truly spectacular marriages of cloud and color at day’s end. Sure, other places get some great sunsets, too, but it’s not just about the sky – it’s what else you can put in your shot. After decades of dodging utility lines and billboards that harshed so many of the pictures I wanted to take in the city, the unspoiled landscape of New Harmony welcomes the eye at every turn.
On any given day, you’ll find regulars chasing the light, exploring the photographic opportunities at their favorite haunts, mentally bookmarking what they plan to shoot in the future when the time and light are just right. We’ve each developed favorite spots for sunrises, sunsets, Milky Way shots, reflections on water. We know where to find wildlife and where our best vantage points are during festivals and events. With a garden calendar in the back of our minds, we eagerly anticipate the blooming of the dogwood trees, the profusion of peonies, the seemingly endless variety of irises, the lily plants that look like Jack in the Beanstalk spiked their bulbs, the exquisitely colored leaves of the maple trees in Autumn.
Through the lens, our appreciation of interesting architecture has grown and our knowledge of plant life and nature has blossomed. We’ve learned to “be in the now” and stay alert and aware. Heaven knows we wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to snap some pictures of a wedding party outfitted in giant dinosaur head masks. Who would believe we encountered a family of foxes if we couldn’t offer photographic evidence? From time to time, there are celebrity spottings to delight shutterbugs as well.
Come visit. Bring whatever you like to take photographs with. Enjoy a picture perfect day. In every season, New Harmony is a photographer’s dream.
