VISITING NEW HARMONY

Last Updated 9/16/2024

As a resident of New Harmony, Indiana, I see the town from the inside out. We live and breathe our little town here. Our residents value our small town roots. Did you know it was settled in the early 1800s? Because of its traditions you will find artists, weavers, painters, potters, and everything in between. But it’s not simply the traditional craftsmanship that you will find in our utopia, it’s the feeling of community. Our town draws people in because of its peaceful beauty, unique spirit, and authenticity.

In New Harmony, we look after each other, and that doesn't simply mean the residents. Our town welcomes visitors. We want you to visit and share in our community. A few years ago, our town created a new slogan, “Visit New Harmony” and this is so true. We want you here. Whether it’s your first visit or your 100th, we value the impact you have on our town and who knows, maybe one day you will join us as a resident.

Because New Harmony emerged from a diverse culture, there’s something for everyone. If you are looking for a quaint walk around town with a picnic lunch or a fine art gallery tour followed by a upscale dinner, we can accommodate that here. Bring your family and let the kids ride their bikes on our low traffic streets. Enjoy the knowledge of the historic sites, check out the beautifully cultivated gardens that took years of preparation. Take a moment and appreciate the small things in life, like a day outdoors in meditation or some quality time with friends and family. Walking around our town will make you feel like time is standing still for a short while. If you are interested in shopping, we also have some of the most unique stores. Our small businesses provide everything from locally made soap to fine art. Our shops have quality antiques, books, vintage collectibles and local memorabilia. And for the foodie in all of us there is amazing cuisine. Our restaurants pride themselves on providing fresh and homemade dishes.

I often hear people say how refreshing New Harmony is, and it's so true. It is beautiful place to enjoy some history, shopping, and fine dining, but what I think makes this place so unique is the way people treat you.  As you roam our town you will start to observe neighbors greeting neighbors. People sharing their love of plants with one another and discussing the unique varieties of plants that are native to our area. You will find individuals who care for each other and truly have a heart for each other and the world we live in. Although New Harmony only has around 850 residents, we consider all our visitors a part of this community. Talk to the locals and you may get them to spill their favorite spots to watch the sunset or hear personal stories that you can’t find in a book. After a day walking around our town you may go home with a new insight about yourself and how to see the world differently.

As we all adjust to a new normal, I’ve realized how much kindness matters. My husband and I have had weeks off to just pause and realize the true beauty in our town. That beauty is not just the landscape and the beautiful dogwoods and irises in bloom. It’s the people. This sense of community seems to come naturally here. It has made me realize that when people say the phrase “Visit New Harmony” they mean it. Visiting New Harmony means something different for everyone and it is something you must experience for yourself.
